A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Trapani, Italy by TravelPod blogger Thomasgillam titled "Selinunte, Old city on the sea" Thomasgillam's travel blog entry: "We awoke from our B and B and had a nice breakfast prepared by a Sicilian family. We had our coffee and bread, and marmalade at a table surrounded by old antiques furniture and portrait paintings of the family's forefathers. They we a nice couple and the beds were some of the best we have slept on during the trip. We paid 50 Euro, and found the place to be well worth it considering the breakfast was included. We anxiously headed off the next morning to view the mosaics of the 10 Roman women in bikinis. When we arrived at the site, we found it was closed for the season. That is one problem with traveling off season. We sucked it up, whined and sniveled a bit, and hit the trail again. We visited the site of Selinunte. This Greek city was on the coast overlooking the sea. It was built in 626 BC. It was destroyed by the Carthaginians in 409 BC and later fell to the Romans in 350 BC Is this tune becoming familiar? The city past is remote and the records are unclear. The sites are named alphabetically AZ. We visited the main sites and moved on to Trapani, Sicily which sits at the base of a mountain. Atop this mountain lies the Castle of Venus, we will see it next. Traveling in Sicily in the off season has been great. You can see by our photos, that we are often alone on the streets of the old cities ... |
